When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8:3-4 ESV)

What is a human being? It’s a familiar flashpoint in debates surrounding abortion. This question, however, appears in a different form in Psalm 8. David asks, “what is man?” To understand David’s point, however, consider how his question is framed:

In comparison the grander parts of our vast universe, why would God notice us? Why does God care about these frail and fleeting creatures of dust? In one sense David’s question goes unanswered. No reason can be given. There is nothing impressive or amazing in us that warrants God’s concern for us.

So what makes this dust precious? The only answer given in Psalm 8 is that God has chosen to honour us. It is God’s decree that makes humans valuable and sets us as rulers over creation and calls us to praise his name.

And so let us return with this perspective to the issue of abortion. What makes a child in the womb worthy of concern and protection? Well, in one sense nothing. They aren’t physically impressive or intellectually astounding. They are actually pretty pathetic. And that sets them on par with the rest of us. And like the rest of us their value comes not from themselves but from their creator. He made them in his image and for his glory. And if he has crowned them with glory and honour, how dare we treat them with distain!

Prayer

Father we recognise that there is nothing in us that is worthy of your love or care. We are weak and finite, and even more than that, we are sinners. Why you would love us we cannot understand. That you would even send your own Son to redeem us is astounding beyond measure. And yet though we cannot comprehend your love, we praise you for it. Thank you that you have set such honour upon humans. And Father we pray today that in you loving concern you would protect those who are vulnerable, and particularly those who are in the womb. Give people eyes to see the preciousness of human life, and even more than that, to see the glory of the one who gives us life and value. Grant repentance to many in our nation, that they would praise you as they were created to. Thankyou that you hear us as we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer Points:

Pray for an increasing recognition of the frailty and finitude of human life, and that people would turn to their creator.
Pray against the lies that would dehumanise life in the womb.
We repent and grieve over the decision of the WA Upper House who voted 23 to 9 to not give treatment to Australian babies born alive from failed abortions. Ask the Lord for truth to convict our nation and her leaders to turn from our wicked ways. Pray that every life be treated with value and dignity and that we do whatever we can for the least of these as if we were doing it for Jesus.
The churches and believers in Sydney to have their hearts listening to Gods heart for September 23rd Love Sydney – Walk for Life 2023 *new location near Park St, HYDE PARK. That as we stand for life as one we are of one accord and reveal Jesus to the powers of darkness.
Those on the frontline preparing for the Love Sydney Walk for Life 2023 2pm in Hyde Park near Park St, the leaders, volunteers, and guest speakers. For good working sound systems, technicians, security, parking, great weather and more people have all obstacles removed to be able to awaken and come out to stand for life.

We pray for every state and territory of Australia to come together to stand for life! For hearts to be awakened and every Christian to rally to rescue the unborn as the church rises up to Walk for Life Sydney 23rd Sept 2023 “Walk for Life Adelaide” 10th Feb 2024 and “March for Life” Brisbane - date TBA, Mackay “March for the Babies” October, “March for the Babies” Saturday 7th Oct 2023 Treasury Gardens to the Melbourne Parliament, Melbourne. Pray for every Territory and State in our Nation to join in and hold rallies and walks for life in their cities.

These current Pro-Life Issues before Parliaments:

Pray that abortion will not increase in Australia. The ACT Government has announced it will provide free abortions from mid 2023. As Medicare sadly already cover the costs for all Australian women having abortions this is likely to be for overseas students, those on work visas and those here on holiday having abortions paid from Australian taxes. This is currently being debated in the Upper House in Western Australia - their Abortion Legislation Reform Bill 2023 has been labelled by some as the most radical abortion law in the world. Pray they include the 4 clauses from the South Australian Termination of Pregnancy Act 2021.

Pray that The Human Rights (Children Born Alive Protection) Bill 2022 be passed speedily in 2023. This Bill will protect babies who are currently, in most States of Australia, being left to die after a failed abortion. This protection for such babies is currently law in NSW (2019) and SA (2021) as amendments to the state Termination of Pregnancy Acts. This Federal Bill, if passed, will make this legislation National. Pray for protection for the three Federal Senators Alex Antic (Liberal Party) Matthew Canavan (National Party) and Ralph Babet (United Australia Party) who presented this Bill 30/11/2022.
